Mashu is the nearest town, quiet and quaint, with a nice supermarket, a public bath, and a free outdoor foot bath in front of the train station. Walking from there to the Backpackers is possible, but some of the roads have fast-moving cars and aren’t set up for pedestrians. If you’re arriving by train, I’m sure the owner can arrange a ride. People in the area were very friendly and more likely to chat than in other parts of Hokkaido. Basic Japanese would help, since English speakers are few and far between. The guesthouse feels intimate, with a shared common area and kitchen next to the rooms. If I remember right, there are two four-bed dorms and one or two family rooms. The owner put guests in separate dorms for more privacy. My bed was especially comfortable, the shower had adequate hot water, and the Wi-Fi was reliable. Laundry is available, but you need to attach the line to the sink faucet to get water flowing. The communal fridge is small, but should be fine unless there are lots of guests or someone has a lot of food. The owner even lent me his bike to explore the great trails nearby. There’s a paved road between the train line and the river that runs parallel to the main road in front of the backpackers. In October I saw lots of red-necked cranes along it. For a quiet morning walk, go to the gas station just up the street, head east, then take the first left to find a lovely, secluded paved loop trail.

We were lucky enough to have one of the buildings all to ourselves. It’s a cozy, wonderful hostel with everything you need, and we had an amazing stay.

The other guests and the staff helping out were incredibly kind and respectful during my two-night stay, which I used as a base for a motorcycle trip. I could park my heavy touring bike comfortably under cover, with plenty of room and a sturdy platform. The facilities were excellent for my needs. I used the basic cooking area, microwave, toaster, and shower. The futons and sheets were clean and well cared for, and clearly laundered properly. After using them, I stripped them myself and put them in the laundry box before leaving. Thanks for everything. I’d love to stay here again as a base for my next trip to Hokkaido.

We came for the low price and stayed two nights, using the inn as a base to cycle and tour Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. As the inn says, there are no convenience stores, supermarkets, or hot springs nearby, though there are a few vending machines. With a car or motorbike, town is about 10 kilometers away, making shopping and hot springs easy to reach. There’s a shower and kitchen, and two bedrooms with two bunk beds in each. I wished there were outlets beside the pillows, but the inn was very clean and the beds were fluffy. It almost felt like staying in a hotel. The receptionist, who knows the owner, kept a comfortable distance and made us feel at ease. We talked about all sorts of things, and those conversations are a fond memory. Thanks for looking after us.
