Hotel Amanek Ginza East

The location is excellent, but it’s about the only thing this tired hotel has going for it, and it doesn’t justify the ridiculous price. I booked six months ahead and stayed for the last week. After booking, I saw the ratings falling across several platforms and worried. I was right to. I knew the rooms would be small and breakfast repetitive. What I didn’t expect was for the breakfast servings to shrink each day, until on our final morning the croissant had only a smear of filling. The first room had a broken shower and faulty light switches. Staff didn’t seem surprised when I reported this, so they clearly knew about it, but offered no apology or compensation. They only said we could move rooms two nights later. The second room smelled strongly of mould. The bathroom fan was too loud to leave running overnight, which may be why. My child and I both had symptoms of mould exposure, and my child’s symptoms eased as soon as we left the hotel each day. The building felt worn out: chipped walls, peeling wallpaper and broken blinds. Both rooms looked clean at first, but closer up there was dust in the corners, hair on the bedding and tears in it. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, simply poor quality, not uncomfortable because they were Japanese style. The blinds didn’t block morning light well. That might be okay in winter, but would be awful in summer. The building was heated far too much. We stayed for a week in January and never once needed our room heater because so much heat came in from the hallway. We often had to open the window. Housekeeping did the bare minimum, and one day they inexplicably took one of our keys. P.S. I’m looking forward to seeing what AI comes up with for the hotel’s ‘response’ to my review.

The area gets very quiet around 9pm, so you’ll have to head out if you want more going on. For anyone after peace and quiet, though, this is the place. There are plenty of Konbini close by and the station is just a two minute walk away. I loved my stay, and all the staff were helpful. One small thing to know: housekeeping can arrive within a seven hour window. I was out for five hours and the room still hadn’t been done when I returned, so I went out for another two hours and it was cleaned while I was away. Not really a problem, just something to be aware of. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

Everyone on staff was pleasant and helpful, and the service was wonderful. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Tokyo!

The staff were the best part, friendly and good at speaking English. They even stored my luggage two days before check-in while I went to Lake Kawaguchiko. The room was comfortable for one person, but don’t bring more than one medium-sized suitcase because it won’t fit. Tsukiji market is within walking distance, as are Ginza, about 15 minutes away, and Tokyo station, about 20 minutes. There are two metro stations a couple of minutes from the hotel, though I usually had to transfer to reach the major lines.
