ELE Cabin Shinjuku Kabukicho

For about $50 a night, I found this really poor value. I’ve paid a similar amount for wonderful ryokans in Japan with a private room, air conditioning, tea, beautiful Japanese-style interiors, and great locations. I’m glad I only stayed two nights, and I feel sorry for anyone staying longer. The only upsides for me were the robe and free luggage storage. Sleep was nearly impossible. The lights stayed on all night and couldn’t be switched off, while the window and door panels didn’t close all the way, letting outside noise straight in. There’s no sound insulation, so I could hear people in the street, late arrivals unpacking, snoring, footsteps, and even the toilet. The bathroom sits right beside the sleeping area, so people using it at night were constantly audible. Quiet hours and basic rules didn’t seem to work. Guests came in at 1-2 AM and sorted their luggage in the same room where others were trying to sleep, and it happened again early in the morning. The shower was unreliable too. Sometimes the water was cold, and I had to use another shower. There’s no way to reach staff, such as through WhatsApp, if there’s a problem. Checkout was the worst part. My checkout time was 11 AM and I wanted a little more sleep, but cleaning staff came in about 15 minutes beforehand and started making noise. I told them I was still there and had time, but they didn’t seem to understand English, or pretended not to, and just said “okay, okay” while carrying on. It felt very disrespectful.

The beds are comfortable and should make for a good night’s sleep. The floors were very clean, and the bath area had everything I needed, so there was no need to bring anything. Lockers with keys made security feel excellent, and reception staff can communicate in English. It’s right in the middle of Kabukicho, one of the world’s top entertainment districts, but the price is unbelievably low and extremely affordable. Be sure to give this place a try. The room and pillow were comfortable, and the locker and shower had enough for an overnight stay. It’s right near Shinjuku, so I could go out on Friday night. Good price too, and I’d recommend it. Overall, it was a good stay.

Traveling alone in Japan at 19, I felt safe and comfortable here, and I love this hostel. The staff were really kind and helped when I accidentally left my card in the room. I couldn't get into the girls' dorm without it. Thank you so much ❤️
