The owner was so kind and helpful during our visit. He spoke very little English, but we managed to communicate with Google Translate and WhatsApp, including arranging breakfast for the mornings. When we checked out, he even offered us a free trip to Mt. Takuo. This is a ryokan, not a hotel, closer to a North American B&B. The tatami rooms are gorgeous, the shared spaces feel luxurious, and the grounds are beautiful. I’ve stayed in very few places I liked more.

We chose the 1200 yen breakfast toward the end of our stay, and it came with an amazing view. Staff were attentive, and Google Translate made communication easy. Thanks for having us. We hope to come back.

We couldn’t shower because there was no hot water, and the heat in our room stopped during the night. At checkout, we couldn’t find the host anywhere. There was no drinking water provided either, and the bottom part of the windows in every room was see-through. We met another couple who had the same kind of bad experience. To us, this felt more like a tea house operating as a hotel and taking advantage of foreigners. Stay away from this “hotel”; don’t make our mistake.

We were lucky to have the whole house to ourselves since there were no other bookings, which gave us the full experience. Hosumi, our host, was exceptionally pleasant and made us a traditional Japanese breakfast for free. The location was fantastic too. The metro and bus trip out is worth it. One thing to know: there’s no central heating or air conditioning, so each room had a space heater.
