As a solo traveler visiting Japan for the first time, I’d been skeptical about the recommendation to stay in a business hotel. I’m glad I did, and very grateful to the desk and cleaning teams for their excellent service from start to finish, even after hours. Some people may find the rooms small, but I thought they were ideal since you’re mostly there to sleep. It’s close to Ueno Station, especially the Iriya gate, with connections across Tokyo. Ameyoko Market Street and Ueno Park are both within a 10-minute walk. The area is quiet and family-friendly, and there’s a high school nearby with very polite students. Keisei to Ueno Station is a bit of a walk, so I’d take a taxi for that short distance.

We picked this place because it was only a little cheaper than the other option. The rooms are small, which I expected, but you can’t open a window and the air felt stuffy in such a tight space. When housekeeping cleaned the room, it was still dirty. The elevator also reeked of cigarette smoke, since smoking is allowed on a few floors.

The price and location are fine, but the room wasn’t completely clean and I wouldn’t return. It’s okay for a night or two. For a longer stay, I’d put the money toward a better hotel.

At about $80 USD a night, the price felt fair. The location was great, and despite being close to a major road, there was surprisingly little traffic noise. The private amenities were a plus. The bed was another story: the pillow and mattress were rock hard, and the comforter was dirty and smelled unpleasant. I was glad I’d brought my own pillow, and would suggest bringing something soft.
