Ashizuri Sunnyside Hotel

The staff were genuinely kind. They waited an extra hour for us to arrive, and when we canceled the rest of our stay after one night, they refunded us in full for the remaining nights. The room was a different story. There was a huge spider, about half the size of my face, mold on the curtains, and stained sheets. The pillows were uncomfortable and the mattress was so thin it felt like sleeping on the floor. The whole place smelled of fish, and the building looked very old and seemed to be in an industrial area. Facilities shown in the photos, like the pool, were either not working or looked nothing like the pictures.

If you enjoy a bit of nostalgia, this place has plenty of charm. Its grand days seem to have been two or three decades ago, but that’s part of the appeal. I found it very clean, and the staff were warm and friendly. The Japanese breakfast was delicious, with a sea view. It feels like a good spot to sit and read a Murakami novel.

The food was so fresh and good, and I doubt you’d find the same quality for the same price elsewhere. The bath, or hot spring, isn’t very big, but it’s clean and nice, with an outdoor section I really liked. The building is a little old, but I came for the scenery as much as a place to sleep, and the view is beautiful. The staff are one of a kind, polite and kind. Even though the room is old, you can see how well they look after it. This is a really nice place and I’d recommend it. The building, including the Onsen, is definitely showing its age. The bath is quite minimal, with an outdoor pool, but the views make the stay worthwhile. Our visit was quiet, and the rooms look out over the ocean. There’s also a private viewpoint about a five-minute walk from the hotel.
