The front desk staff at Blue Ridge Hotel were among the most welcoming I’ve encountered, even with the language barrier. The amenities are limited, but what’s there is top-notch. Shuttle rides are available to and from the ski resorts and nearest JR station, timed around opening, closing, arrivals, and departures. The onsen is a real plus in winter, and the outdoor bath looks out over a beautiful snowy forest at night.

The place has a nostalgic feel, with imported European furniture, and the rooms are larger than in modern hotels. The beds are soft and comfortable, and there are separate bathrooms with large mirrors. Staff are friendly and welcoming. You can take the “Bus to Kannabe” to get here. There’s an indoor and outdoor onsen, plenty of dishes at breakfast and dinner, and lots of tea options to try. Bikes are free to use, along with sports facilities. The Kannabekogen Rest Area is about a 550m walk away, with a small supermarket and souvenirs, a bakery, a restaurant, and a public onsen. The free bikes make the trip fun. There’s skiing in January if you’re planning a winter sports visit. Restaurants nearby are limited, with only one, so I’d include breakfast and dinner. Shuttles run to and from Ebara station, but be sure to let the front desk know.

There are several vending machines around the hotel, and the rooms are spacious. You can rent ski and snowboard gear and get transport to the ski trail, so it’s a nice option for a skiing or snowboarding trip. I’d check whether the ski area is open first. When I went, only one area was open, and even that used artificial snow.

I booked online after seeing the room photos, which looked okay, and paid USD 255 a night, without breakfast or dinner. I regretted it once we checked in. The facilities and service were poor, and the staff had trouble speaking and understanding English. The air conditioning was strange. It was 7 degrees Celsius outside that night, but the room sometimes felt cold and then got extremely hot while we were asleep. We slept badly. There were two restaurants, but one had already closed around 7pm. That left the lobby restaurant buffet, which was a disappointment: very few choices, cold food, and only the tempura was freshly made. The food didn’t taste good, and at USD 45 per person it felt like a disaster for this trip. I was hungry and couldn’t sleep well.
