I was here during a week-long tour of Tohoku. The hotel is basic, but has a lot of atmosphere. We stayed so we could do the pilgrimage the next day, which turned out to be a highlight of the whole trip.

The food at breakfast and dinner was fresh and absolutely delicious, and the room was really spacious with air conditioning. The shower and bath area was huge and clean. Even on a full weekend, I had the bath to myself each time. The baths aren't open during the day, though you can still shower then. I'm not a morning person, so I hesitated to book because I wasn't sure I could get up for the prayers. I went both mornings anyway. They start at 7 a.m. and last around 20 minutes, and it's a nice touch that they include your name. On the second day, most guests didn't speak Japanese, so the staff arranged a translator. Joining isn't required, as I noticed some local guests went to breakfast without attending. The family running the lodge and the staff were very kind. I managed with my limited Japanese, though I'm pretty sure they can speak English well if needed.

The family who run the inn were very kind and hospitable, and they made delicious vegetarian food. The place is clean, with spacious, comfortable rooms. They also make a real effort to include guests in the morning prayer, with translation and an explanation. We highly recommend staying here when visiting Mt. Haguro.

The hosts are Mountain Monks (Yamabushi), and they're wonderful. We were shy at our first prayer, but by the morning we left we were fully taking part. It was a quiet, peaceful, almost magical stay for my partner and me. The rooms are huge, likely among the largest you'll find in Japan at this price. The bathrooms were immaculately clean, and the main attractions are a short walk away. Stock up on snacks and drinks at a convenience store before arriving, since there aren't any stores like that close by. I'd happily go back next time I'm nearby.

We had a great stay with my family. The people were very welcoming, and the shukubo is a lovely traditional building in an amazing village.
