A really great Japanese hotel.

The food was the reason I booked this guesthouse for sightseeing in Tsuwano, and it lived up to its reputation. I love fish, so all the fish dishes made me happy, especially the medium-fatty tuna sashimi. Breakfast was substantial too. Everything tasted good, and I finished every grain of rice. At 8800 yen for one night with two meals, I have no complaints. From other reviews, it sounds like the menu varies quite a bit by season, so I'd like to return. The landlady was humble and provided excellent service. Bathrooms and toilets are shared, so you need to be okay with that. After checkout I strolled around Tsuwano town at an easy pace. Maybe because it was morning, there weren't many tourists. These days it seems everywhere is crowded with foreign tourists...

For 8,800 yen over Golden Week, we got two meals and great value. The meals were generous, and the rice was delicious. Tsuwano Station is only a one-minute walk away, and I also got to see the SL Yamaguchi.

We stayed one night, February 18-19, and the food was incredible. We ordered the Fugu Savory Course, with one fugu per person, so two fish for the two of us. I was already about 80% full after the sashimi. The liver tempura had a crisp outside and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth middle, and after the firm fried chicken we were stuffed. Then the fugu chili arrived. The pot was huge, enough for four or five, with so much fugu that it wouldn't all fit, plus fresh vegetables, mushrooms, and tofu. We couldn't finish it. They said they could serve the leftovers as rice porridge the next morning, so I took them up on it. Apparently people ordering the fugu course often can't finish, so that's a common option. I had the fugu porridge with my breakfast vegetables. It seemed they'd shredded the fish before cooking it, and it made for an incredibly luxurious breakfast.

The food is the best part here: both the quality and amount are better than at many inns, and prices are reasonable. The rooms are small but acceptable, the staff are very nice, and the cleanliness is fine. There are two toilets in the hall, so that wasn't a problem. The bath is guesthouse-sized rather than a hot spring, but they offer a discount ticket for the hot spring at a nearby roadside station. It's a three-minute walk from the station, and there's a convenience store with an ATM within walking distance. The lodging area feels a bit like budget accommodation, which is a downside. Since it's a guesthouse, you lay out your own futon, and when leaving they ask you to leave it as it is, without folding it. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for good food, reasonable accommodation, and acceptable cleanliness.
