The onsen water was good, but getting to the outdoor bath from the indoor one meant walking along a rather inconveniently long corridor. The guest room was musty enough that my companion wanted to leave as soon as we arrived, and the hotel needs to work on room cleanliness. The food was fair, a standard Japanese ryokan buffet. Service was poor. When we tried to reserve the private onsen bath in Sakura kan, the evening and morning front desk staff gave us completely different information. They should be trained to give guests a consistent answer.

The hotel and onsen were really nice. The buffet dinner didn’t appeal to us, and having to run around to get food made the meal feel rushed. There was one of the nicest shrines I’ve ever seen nearby.

We used this somewhat dated onsen hotel as a base for a day trip to Kamikochi. The food was great.

The rooms were clean and the staff were kind. The onsen water felt soft, and the food was very good.
