The staff were friendly and professional, and the service was a highlight of my trip to this area. Our room was roomy and comfortable. I’d definitely try the traditional dinner and breakfast, the food was amazing, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. You can use all the local onsens, including the one on the 6th floor. They also offer convenient pick-up from the train station and a ride to the snow monkeys park. I highly recommend this place.

Four of us shared a room and paid 200 each for two nights, which felt like an insanely good deal. The room was beautiful, and at 400 a night it came with access to all the public onsens and the hotel onsen, two incredible meals a day, and free shuttles to the monkeys and local transit station. The staff were helpful and kind throughout. Incredible.

The shuttle to the snow monkey park and station was free, and the staff went out of their way to help us in several ways. This was our first ryokan, and the room really surprised us: lovely lighting, a great layout, and much bigger than most rooms we stayed in around Japan. Dinner came in such generous portions that we could barely finish, and breakfast was excellent and wonderfully different. I also got to enjoy the hotel’s dedicated 5th-floor onsen by myself at 5 a.m., which made the whole place feel even more magical. This onsen town is like a dream. I only wish we’d stayed longer. I’ll come back someday, definitely in winter.

The free ride to and from the snow monkey park and train station was a great touch. We had a fantastic stay at Suminoyu, with welcoming, friendly hosts and staff. It was our best stay in Japan. What a lovely ryokan.

Our first ryokan stay couldn’t have gone better. The service was wonderful, and we had some of the best meals of our trip in Japan. The town around it and its onsens felt magical.
