Shim Beach Resort

We spent two nights here during a coastal road trip with my daughter's family from Sydney. It's near elephant rock and crocodile rock, and the girls wanted to surf, so being close to baby point and elephant rock worked really well. The place sits on the beach, away from the busy city, with lots of palm and pine trees around it. The rooms were comfortable, very clean, and budget-friendly, with great air conditioning. Having a clean kitchen was an extra bonus. The two people working there provided wonderful service. Definitely recommend staying here in Arugam Bay.

The location was good, but the stay was a mess because of what seemed to be a serious communication failure between the management in Colombo and the staff at Shim. I shared our food preferences days in advance and confirmed them again hours beforehand, yet the Shim staff only heard about them from Colombo an hour before we arrived. Colombo had also promised prices well ahead of time, but the staff at Shim didn't know about them. The bedrooms need improvement, and the staff weren't friendly. I can't recommend the place and was very disappointed. From the comments, it seems it may suit foreigners, but not locals.

We rented a scooter to reach the nearby surf spots and get away from the busy part of Arugam bay. It was lovely to return to the quiet Shim beach resort and recharge. You can also walk along the beach early in the morning and see elephants on the crocodile rock, which is exceptional. The place is tucked under coconut trees, looks out over a beautiful beach, and is about five minutes from Arugam bay by scooter. Shafika and Alameen were generous, attentive hosts and always available. The menu has delicious meals made to order, and Kamal teaches yoga with passion, sharing his approach and useful advice for practice. Our room and bathroom were simple and clean, and the bed was comfortable. We had a wonderful week here. If you want a quiet stay in simple surroundings with welcoming hosts, this is a lovely choice.
