Joe's Resort Bentota

The colonial-style architecture was lovely, and the rooms were clean, comfortable, and really spacious. After a slow two-hour drive along the normal Galle road, we spent one memorable, relaxing night at Joes Resort. The pool was very clean, and the beach added to the atmosphere. The food was great and the service excellent. I’d definitely recommend it for a relaxing weekend.

Our triple room was spacious and good, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The resort sits right on a beautiful beach. Mr. Mahesh kindly brought us a delicious local Srilankan breakfast when we asked.

Our rooftop room had a lovely view over the ocean and pool, and there was plenty of space, with a lounge area, coffee and tea setup, and a large, clean bathroom with both a shower and a bath. My friend and I stayed one night at Joes resort. The staff welcomed us warmly with a refreshing drink. We had a late lunch at the restaurant beside the hotel, overlooking the ocean, and it was delicious. There’s a super store across the road. We didn’t explore much because we were tired from nearby attractions. The buffet breakfast was good, and everything else was good too. Our only complaint was being cold at night, since they provided just a sheet and no duvet.

The pool area was sandy everywhere and wasn’t swept or cleaned during our stay. The water looked suspicious, as though it hadn’t been changed in ages, and the staff’s morning “cleaning” made no difference. The lounge furniture felt like it could break at any moment, and breakfast dishes were left on the outdoor dining tables all day. Even though there’s a restaurant, nobody serves you at the pool or beach, so you have to walk to the nearby terrace. The architecture is grand and stunning when you arrive, but the neglected details chip away at it. The hotel’s interior windows and elevator glass looked as though they hadn’t been wiped since opening day. Rooms were somewhat acceptable, but still felt outdated and neglected. The linens and towels seemed washed, but were so worn I hesitated to use them. Furniture, outlets, and lighting were old and damaged. Food is subjective, so I’ll only comment on breakfast. This place could have been spectacular, but it doesn’t seem to be run by people with vision or proper hospitality skills. If the manager did more than wander around and chat on the phone, maybe the hotel could regain the glory shown in the site and Booking photos. It calls itself 4 stars, but I’d deduct two.
