Kabalana Surf Lodge

The best family holiday we’ve had so far, and we’re already counting down to another visit. We first came to Global Surf Lodge for a solo surf camp last year, then returned with my wife and our kids, aged 9 and 4. Our son had his first surf lessons here and loved them. Watching him catch his first waves was pure magic. The instructors are professional, passionate and very patient, with groups for all abilities, from beginners to advanced surfers. My wife enjoyed quiet time by the pool with a book, yoga, and moments with our little girl splashing nearby. The lodge is clean and comfortable, with air conditioning, hot water and reliable WiFi. The friendly staff made us feel like family and were always happy to help. Kabalana beach, other surf breaks and great restaurants are just steps away, so it was easy to have both a relaxing and adventurous holiday.

We chose this place for my birthday, even though £100 a night felt steep. We’ve paid less even at a 5-star hotel in Colombo. For that room price, I expected basics like a hair dryer and kettle. Instead, we had to walk outside for hot water every time, even at night, which was especially inconvenient because our room was one of the furthest away. The doors let in light, so the room was really bright in the morning. The front desk staff could have done a better job welcoming guests, explaining the activities and services, and handling problems. We also couldn’t pay by card, which was unfortunate for such a large bill. We left the tag asking for the room to be cleaned, but it wasn’t done. After we complained, they apologized and responded quickly, and the room was taken care of while we were at dinner. We appreciated that, but at this price and level of quality, cleaning shouldn’t be something that can simply be forgotten. Since the front desk knew my birthday was the next day, it would have been nice to feel a little more welcomed or acknowledged at breakfast.

The whole crew was kind and helpful, and I enjoyed every minute of the week. My surfing improved a lot, so I’d definitely come back. A great place if you want to take your surfing up a level.

The atmosphere at Global Surf felt like a real home for surfers. The team were welcoming and professional, and the place was clean and comfortable. Great food too. A lovely package for surfers who want good service and a fun vibe. Highly recommend! 🌊
