We booked by phone because the website wasn't working, so be ready to speak with staff in Russian or Latvian. The toilets are outside and rustic, there are lots of bugs, and I wished the doors and windows had screens. You only get a shower in the larger huts, so this works best as a short stop. We stayed in a barrel house, which was basic but fine for one night. The lake views were wonderful, the water is so clear, and the whole place sits in a beautiful protected area. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Saunas and catamarans can be booked ahead.

The budget cabin had a terrible mattress, ants were getting inside, and the disposable plates we were given were dirty.

Whenever I'm in LATVIA, we make a point of coming here. It's a fantastic place to unwind with friends, and it never lets us down. You can get drinks and ice cream, and there are water sports too. The rooms and sauna are available and clean.

I hadn't expected to find a lake like this in Latvia. Sventes Rasa turned out to be a great find, and I'd say the resort matches or even beats similar places in Lithuania. It's about 190 km from Vilnius, and Daugavpils is an easy drive away, as is Zarasus in Lithuania. I originally wanted a wooden lodge in Lithuania's lake district, but prices were far too high, so I looked in Latvia instead, and it paid off. The place is near a peaceful lake, around 11 km from the LT/LV border and about the same distance from Daugavpils. The beach is great, with platforms on the water for sunbathing and relaxing. They rent water bikes, SUPs, windsurfing gear and boats at good prices. There are several kinds of accommodation, from simple lodges to larger wooden houses. For the best facilities and view, choose the VIP house. The terrace view is something else. I'll definitely come back.

The lake is lovely and the water very clean. We stayed in a caravan that was clean and roomy enough for five or six people, at a nice campsite.
