Ambassador Hill

We've already scheduled our next stay. This is our new go-to hotel, very clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced for the area. It's a small place with limited rooms, which is part of what makes it unique. The deluxe room is just the right size, while the standard room works well if, like us this weekend, you don't plan to spend much time in it. Some rooms look out toward Shwe Dagon Pagoda, which is really pretty at night. There's a comfortable seating area on the top-floor balcony, great for studying, relaxing, or spending time with others. Breakfast has consistently been tasty, and the Shan noodles were especially good, made to order with excellent soup alongside the other options on the bar. The small Mitsubishi aircons are powerful. We kept turning ours down, even during the day, though it's not very hot out right now. I'd add a cushion to soften the mattresses, but that's a personal preference. I have the same complaint at many Southeast Asian hotels, even some higher-end brands. These beds weren't the hardest I've slept on and were still moderately comfortable. I ran into the owner, Oo Htun, on the balcony, and he was very cordial and kind. That same disposition shows in how the management and support staff treat guests. The manager, Thant Zin, is top notch, attentive, and accommodating. Even when something seems impossible, he makes it work. The team is always cleaning walls, floors, and surfaces, but will stop right away to help. Impressive team and facility. Photos to come!

The breakfast choices were limited, with no familiar Myanmar dishes like Mohinga or Nanngyi Thote. There was no bottled drinking water either. In the room, the washbasin and shower fixture were broken, and water was leaking. The door had no firm manual lock, so I had to trust they didn't have another key. The light switch was by the entrance, which meant walking back there to turn the light off. What a pain.

I liked having a terrace, especially since smoking isn't allowed inside the room. The place was peaceful, and the room felt comfortable and clean, with fresh linens and a spotless bathroom. Staff were friendly and quick to respond, and there was wifi and breakfast. I had a fantastic stay.

Getting a taxi or public transport from here can be difficult, though the neighborhood on Than Lwin Rd is nice and quiet. Parking is limited, but usually enough for the number of guests. The rooms were spacious and clean, and service was excellent. It has more of a warm, cozy family-inn feel than a hotel.
