During 2019-2020, Shwe Yo was the happiest place in the world for me. I can’t think of a single negative thing about it. It used to be the best hostel in the whole of South East Asia, and maybe the world. You only realize how much you miss something once it’s gone, and Shwe Yo is the clearest example of that for me. The caring management, kind staff, lively social atmosphere, and cozy feel were all 10/10. It closed in March 2020 because of Covid, followed by Myanmar’s unstable political situation. I wish the staff and the whole management family team all the happiness. I hope they can recover from this loss like a phoenix and open the hostel again someday, even somewhere else. They still haven’t removed the listing from booking websites, so I hope that means they haven’t given up and that their efforts will work out.

I felt safe here while travelling alone in Myanmar, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The hostel is centrally located in Yangon, near China and town and within walking distance of many downtown attractions. The cafe serves food during the day and evening, with a lovely selection. A light, simple breakfast was included in my booking. I stayed in an 8 person room that had no more than 3 people in it while I was there. The other guests were quiet and respectful. The bathrooms were a bit lacklustre, though nothing unusual for a shared space. For the price and location, it’s worth it. I also loved the artwork. The painting of Inle Lake in my room made me feel especially calm.

The breakfast was simple but filling, and the owners clearly take pride in cooking it at home each morning. The rooms are kept up well, and I had no problems with the bathroom. Space is tight, though. The hostel fills quickly and the common room is small. Still, the icy A/C, breakfast, and wonderful workers made up for that. After spending a few weeks in Myanmar, Shwe Yo Hostel really grew on me. It’s well located, and the staff are spectacularly helpful, whether you’re new to Myanmar or back in Yangon after travelling around the country. The owners are warm and love chatting with guests. They’ll answer questions about Burmese language, getting around, exchange rates, bus info, and tourist "traps". They also give out free tickets for the city train, which loops around Yangon and goes into the country. It makes for a relaxed, fun afternoon, and a chance to meet locals and see places you might otherwise miss.

They looked after us so well when we got terrible food poisoning from another restaurant. On our last day, they even let us leave our bags and shower there before our evening flight. The owners put so much heart into this place and do everything they can to help. They’ll book tickets and sit with you to plan your time in Myanmar. The breakfast is healthy and really good. The place is super clean, with huge bathrooms and beds, and it’s in a great area near a nice grocery store and lots to do. I can’t wait to go back and see our lovely Burmese family.

The beds are big and really comfortable, and the food was great. What stood out most was how the staff took care of me when I came down with Dengue Fever. They arranged a taxi to the hospital and handled everything, so I didn’t have to lift a finger while sick and far from home. They go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. Highly recommend it if you want a little slice of home away from home. Thanks, guys!
