Toyoko Inn Ulaanbaatar

It's within walking distance of the city center, convenient, and more affordable than many of Ulaanbaatar's high-end hotels. The rooms are clean and comfortable compared with similar places nearby. They're standard size, though some people might find them a little small, but they're functional and tidy. I liked having a bathtub for a soak after a long day, and the modern Japanese-style heated electronic toilets were hygienic. Breakfast had a decent selection, relatively varied compared with other hotel options in Mongolia. A good value choice if cleanliness and comfort matter.

The location was okay, with restaurants and a grocery store nearby. I stayed three nights, but the heater was so noisy on the first night that I couldn't sleep, so the hotel moved me to another room. Breakfast was awful, with very few choices and not even a toaster for the bread. Never coming back.

The location is handy, close to convenience shops and places to eat. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, though the rooms are small. It has a Japanese feel because it's a Japanese brand, and they serve a simple Japanese breakfast. The hot water ran out at night, but apparently that affected the whole area, so it wasn't the hotel's fault.

The WiFi was the worst I've had anywhere in Mongolia, like dial-up in 1997, maybe worse. The rest was much better: friendly, courteous staff who were helpful, a very clean and well-maintained building, and fresh towels every day. The rooms are comfortable and the bathroom is high tech, with both a handheld shower and a rainforest shower over the bath. Breakfast was really good, with scrambled eggs and vegetables, miso soup plus another soup, rice, fresh fruit, and coffee or tea. They have two washers and dryers. A load costs T6500, and they provide the detergent too.
