AM Hostel

The location worked really well for avoiding crowds, tucked between the busier parts of Sliema and Valletta and close to Roman Bath Beach. The room itself was basic but comfortable, and we didn't mind it. The receptionist was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Having reception control the AC was a little frustrating, though I understand that's how the building is set up. Housekeeping cleaned without us asking, which I appreciated, but they took one of our towels. When I asked for a replacement, the housekeeper lectured me about not giving out extra towels before checkout. I explained I only wanted the towel they'd removed replaced. He eventually brought two, but the long exchange was awkward for no reason. I understand the policy, but if guests shouldn't get another towel, please leave the towels they already have.

We went with our school for a week, and the rooms were dirty and moldy. We were given one towel for the whole week. The evening food was inedible, everything was ultra-frozen, and lunch was a sandwich that even pigs wouldn't eat. Every day someone was sick in the bathroom or vomiting. Reception was extremely rude and seemed ready to fine you just for looking at them the wrong way. Avoid this place for a vacation or study trip.

The location is truly outstanding, with friendly staff, a shop around the corner, and reception available 24 hours. I thought the AC gave a proper temperature, even though I was on an upper bed, but guests may not be able to control it. The bathroom was a typical hostel one, with a clogged shower, and the sheets smelled a little. If you stay in a dorm, expect roommates to be girls in their 20s who came to Malta to party and drink. Ours came in loudly and drunk at 3 am, then kept talking, which meant no sleep. The hostel should consider not returning the deposit when guests disturb others like that.

Getting around was easy, with transport to the capital Valleta and Saint Julian's, the nightlife district. The hotel is next to Sliema bay for swimming, and the staff were kind and helpful. The rooms were clean and good, with comfortable beds and a shower and bathroom in each room. The AC is switched off in the morning and at night unless you ask them to leave it running. For longer stays, you also have to request fresh sheets and towels, since they won't change them otherwise.
