Guest House de la Valette

The only good thing here is the location. The staff are friendly when they’re around, but the rooms are dirty. Mine smelled strongly of mold and had no window, which was a disaster. The front photo on Google should be changed because it doesn’t show the hotel itself. What you see at the front is a glass door behind the restaurant, while the entrance is the road waiters use to get to the kitchen. The restaurant isn’t even part of the hotel, and breakfast is at another hotel. The only way to get fresh air into the room is through the entrance door, with the restaurant kitchen below it.

We had the top-floor room with a jacuzzi. It was nice, but I don’t think it was worth the price. The hotel is right downtown, so expect noise at night. The entrance is difficult to find, so keep an eye out.

The location is great and the staff are friendly, but I wouldn’t stay here again. The room looked like the photos, though it was very run down, and the floors need a good scrub. The biggest issue for me as a solo female traveller was the all-glass room door. It lets in light all night because the balcony lights stay on, and I didn’t feel safe. There’s a slotted gate, but it doesn’t feel secure. A roller blind and a better lock on the gate would be such simple fixes. Safety is why I gave it two stars. I was worried about the live music and partying on Merchant street, but I didn’t hear that at all. I did hear every noise from the other guests, though, so bring earplugs and an eye mask. There were multiple cockroaches in the bathroom, a spider in the toilet roll, and mold. I was also given a dirty towel, and the lobby absolutely stunk. The room was okay otherwise, but unfortunately it wasn’t worth what I paid.

There were cockroaches in our room. It was cleaned daily, with sheets and towels changed, but the rooms themselves were dirty and looked much worse than the pictures. The shower doors wouldn’t close properly, and the toilet leaked constantly. After 10, no one is at reception, and the main door is broken and very hard to open. The pillows were uncomfortable, and the mattress was visibly dirty in places.
