Hotel Sun ha Bacalar

The hotel is about a five-minute walk from the center. When we arrived around 20.00, the room smelled odd, and the bathroom ceiling and the wall area by the door were covered in mold. The staff member said he couldn't do anything then. We asked again in the morning and were shown two other rooms, but they had the same mold problem, so switching didn't seem worthwhile. We booked another hotel over breakfast because we didn't want to spend two more nights there. On returning, we saw a staff member carrying white paint, and found that the mold had been painted over. There was also a lot of cleaning product used to cover the smell. It looked okay, but we still left. We understand Bacalar and the area are humid, but this isn't how complaints should be handled.

The pool was lovely, though it opened a little late, and having free lagoon access just down the street made the location perfect. Our room was cute and very clean, and the staff were charming and helpful. A breakfast would have made the stay perfect.

We were glad we had booked only one night, and would suggest paying a little more for nicer accommodation. The location is handy for the beachfront, the city center, and lots of lagoon tour options nearby. Our room, number 2, was quite clean, had a hot shower, and we didn't see any insects. Still, I can't recommend the hotel. It wasn't completely awful, but the rooms and equipment were in poor shape and smelled and looked moldy, especially compared with the photos on sites like booking.com. Breakfast was included in our booking, but there was no restaurant and no breakfast. The leaf blower at 6am was nerve-racking too. It seemed like they were just blowing leaves from one side of the street to the other and back again.

The location is good and the price is economical, but our two-night stay at Sun-Ha Bacalar was disappointing because the hotel felt neglected. Our room, 22, smelled strongly of mold, and sewage odors came in through the bathroom window. We had booked a lake view but were put in a different room, and nobody made an effort to fix that. We couldn't get towels when we asked, had no blankets on a cold night, and only got a worn-out throw on the second night. There was no housekeeping during our stay. The small staff seemed stretched thin, and the front desk felt unwelcoming. Staff were often on their phones, and other guests told us they had similar frustrations. With the right management this place has potential, but as it is, it didn't offer a comfortable or welcoming stay.
