El Chital

The staff were the most attentive we've had in Mexico so far. It's a lovely little gem, with beautiful cabins, comfortable beds, and a great shower. Breakfast was excellent, too. You can spend the day doing anything or absolutely nothing. We'll be back!❤️

The food was the best part of our three-night stay. Breakfast was included, and Alex was managing the property as well as cooking for us because we were the only guests. We're vegan, and he went out of his way to put together a special menu. Everything was delicious, so I can't fault that at all. Thanks, Alex! The grounds and natural setting are beautiful, but the place feels neglected. The pool, kayaks, and other parts of the property need a lot of maintenance. It may have been lovely when it first opened, but it needs work to match the prices being charged. The location means you're pretty much on your own with the lake. That can be amazing, but you're also far from anywhere else and can feel stuck there. The lake here is salt water, unlike Bacalar's, and isn't nearly as picturesque. We had planned to stay longer, but the place didn't live up to the photos and description. The log cabins smelled very damp. The first room they showed us was unbearable. There's no fresh water, only salt water from the shower and taps, and turning on the hot tap brought a powerful methane smell that made showering unpleasant. Alex was great, but otherwise there's a lot to fix before the rates feel justified. I wouldn't necessarily recommend staying here unless you find a very cheap deal.

This is my kind of escape for relaxing and connecting with nature. It's peaceful and quiet in a way I haven't found anywhere else in Mexico, and the food is good, too. The people running the place are kind and respectful of the environment. Highly recommend it.

We came to El Chital last spring needing to disconnect, and the relaxed atmosphere gave us just the chance to do that. I still miss the good energy I felt there. Still grateful for that wonderful retreat surrounded by pure nature.
