The green patio with its fountain made a lovely center to the lobby, and there was also a pool at the back. Bistrola 57 has an entrance from the hotel; I ate there twice and enjoyed the Italian and Mexican food. Wifi was strong even in my room. I was on the second floor looking over Calle 60, but heard very little traffic. Music bass, probably from the restaurant, did come through, though it seemed to stop around 11. I stayed five nights at Casa del Balaam, and the location was wonderful, on Calle 60 near the main shopping streets and only a few blocks from both Plaza Grande and Parque Santa Lucia. The staff were friendly and helpful. My room was a little old, but the bed was comfortable and the water pressure excellent, with plenty of warm water. It was very hot during my visit, and the AC only had high, medium, and low settings, so I kept it on high to stay comfortable. I appreciated having two elevators, though they're older and can stop a bit above or below the floor, so watch your step getting in and out. It was an easy adjustment. I'll stay at Casa del Balaam again.

We got stuck in town by a storm and tried three older hotels in the center. The Balam was much better than the other two. The front desk was kind and as responsive as they could be, and the little cubbies, patios, and vintage elevators were a treat. This place has grit and charm. It's beautiful and distinctive, with dated rooms, and we weren't sure the AC worked. We loved staying here. It's definitely not new, soulless, or sterile. The location is A+, between Santa Lucia park and the central plaza, with pretty much anything you need only a few blocks away.

The hotel has a wonderful courtyard atmosphere, and the location is fantastic. My room was basic but spacious and comfortable. The pool stays mostly in the shade during the day, with a couple of hours of sun around 12-2/3. Staff were incredibly helpful and nice, and for the price I'm not sure you could find somewhere better. Noise was my only real complaint. On Saturday a musician started at 9:30pm, and the sound carried all the way to the second floor, even at the opposite end of the hotel. On Thursday and Saturday nights, loud bass made it hard to fall asleep even with earplugs. We couldn't work out where it was coming from, but it sounded like a party or club.

The location was the one good thing. The room felt dated, the bed was uncomfortable, the bathroom smelled strongly of mildew, and the water pressure was poor.

Really like this hotel. Parking is easy, the location is great, and the service is good. The staff are friendly and helpful, especially Sergio!
