Hotel Casa Santo Tomás

The plumbing caused us a lot of trouble. The shower took ages to get hot, and the sink water never warmed up. Our toilet was leaking, and when we reported it, staff tried to stop the leak by shutting off the pipe, which left us unable to flush. Since it still wasn’t fixed, we had to change rooms in the middle of the night. The hotel needs substantial maintenance, from replacing rusty trash bins and rotten wood beneath sinks to repairing basic plumbing. Until that work is done, I’d find it hard to recommend staying here.

I could walk to nearly everything from Hotel Casa Santo Tomas, and food was easy to find at the markets and shops. That location was the main thing that drew me here for a week. Check-in was simple, the room was great for sleeping, and the hotel was clean. Hot water in the shower was limited, but it was in the 90s while I was there, so I could live with that. Staff kindly checked whether I had a place to stay the night before my checkout. I’d return, hopefully with a little more hot water.

The rooms are clean and the beds reasonably comfortable, and the service is good. Warm water is limited and slow to arrive. The neighborhood itself is quiet, despite what some reviews say, but the bar/restaurant at the front plays music until around midnight every night, and you can hear the bass from the rooms. There are no blackout curtains, and the courtyard lights stay on until about 10:30-11. As an early and light sleeper, that made this a poor fit for me. If the noise and light don’t bother you, it’s good value.

The center of Oaxaca city is very close, and you can walk almost straight to the main square. The beds are large and comfortable, the room looks smart, and the bathroom is great-looking too. Fantastic hotel. I’d highly recommend it.
