Hotel Real Santo Domingo

My toilet kept working and then failing for four days, and other people in our group had restroom problems too. Mine was the worst. I reported the toilet and shower to the manager on the first day. He said “the lady” would fix them, though she wasn’t a plumber. I told him a plumber was needed. On day two he said he’d call one, but that didn’t happen. I complained every day, and on day four he finally called his uncle, who is a plumber. It was an easy fix. I stayed with a group during dia de los muertos, and I give this hotel one star. Don’t stay here until they fix the plumbing.

The location and the place itself were nice, but they have a lot to improve. The noise all night made this the worst experience in Oaxaca for us. A dog left in a room barked nonstop, a family arrived at 2am with screaming kids and their door open, and the bell rang from 5am for 10 minutes with nobody answering. We couldn’t get even half an hour of uninterrupted sleep. We had a confirmed double reservation, but no one was at reception when we arrived. A girl hosted us but didn’t explain that she was deaf. She first said there were no rooms or reservations, and because she couldn’t understand us, she thought we were being disrespectful. The responsible person didn’t answer his phone, but eventually appeared and sorted it out. The room was very dirty, with cigarette butts on the floor and dirty, small sheets.

The rooftop and courtyard are lovely. There’s a shared kitchen, and our room had a balcony overlooking the city.

I stayed here for Day of the Dead, and the location worked well, near downtown and the cemetery. The staff were kind and friendly. I’d highly recommend staying here.
