The beds are very comfortable, the housekeeping is excellent, and Carlos the concierge was very helpful. The hotel also has a small, attractive pool and an excellent location, which may keep it going, but there are other good options. Oaxaca itself is super, but we won't stay at the Quinta real again or recommend it. It could be great, but it isn't, not remotely. For us, the Quinta real simply wasn't worth the price, and it didn't provide five-star service. We were unhappy to be placed above the kitchen, where the breakfast and grease smells were strong. When I raised it, the man who checked us in was indifferent, gave what I thought were nonsense explanations about everyone having the same experience, and didn't try to offer a solution, such as having four people stay in two rooms. I may look very "gringo", but I've lived half my life in South America and speak very fluent Spanish, so I'm familiar with that kind of nonsense. I wish them the best.

I was there for a wedding and had an amazing stay. The staff were friendly, helped us find a shoe store, and brought us chocolate and juice on different days. The pool was lovely, the view inside was fantastic, and security at every entrance made us feel really safe. We also attended a reception in the big banquet hall, which was gorgeous. I highly recommend staying here and enjoying Oaxaca!

This hotel has a wonderful history, and its gardens are beautiful, with colourful Bugambilia and flamboyant trees. The pool is surely the best in the historical center. Service is exceptional, and guards at every entrance help the place feel very safe.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel based on what happened to me, and especially not for children, older people, or anyone with limited mobility. I'm in my 30s and able-bodied, and I was simply walking out, not running, when I fell. This could happen to anyone. I wanted people to know that an accident in this older building could cause a serious injury, and neither the building nor the staff seemed prepared to respond with any consideration. The hotel is beautiful, but it's very old, mostly stone, with lots of stairs and no elevators. That may be part of its charm, but it also calls for extra precautions. On my last night, I slipped while stepping down a steep stone step at a busy entrance. It was slippery, with no ramp or even a mat for traction. I fractured my ankle and needed to go to the hospital. The hotel had no wheelchair, so I had to walk to a taxi even though I couldn't, which made the injury worse. When I returned from the hospital, staff asked when I planned to check out the next morning and said they'd have a wheelchair available. There was an event later that morning, but they said they'd take me through so I wouldn't have to go the long way around. They didn't bring the wheelchair, so I had to walk again. Then, at the door where they told me to wait, they refused to let me through because they were setting up for the event. They sent me the long way around, out through the same entrance where I'd fallen, around the hotel, and back through the main entrance to the lobby. I found that extremely inconsiderate. The event hadn't even started, and I wouldn't have disturbed anything. The detour added about 15 minutes of painful walking. I expected much better service, or basic human empathy, from what was described as the city's most expensive and “luxurious” hotel. EDIT: In response to the hotel's reply below, I did contact the lobby on my departure day and asked to enter through the lobby door. They refused and told me to go around the front of the building. Their review reply sounds concerned and apologetic, but in person the staff member was defensive and even annoyed, as if my concern were an inconvenience. Also, as I explained on the night I fell, I canceled the medical call the hotel had made because they said, “we can call him but it will be a while”. That didn't sound promising, so we asked a family doctor for help in the meantime, and I was advised to go to the hospital as soon as possible.

The bathroom could use a bit of improvement, but the rest was good. It's a lovely hotel with lots of historic spots for photos, and breakfast had a great range of choices. The location is excellent for walking to the civic center, famous church, and shopping and restaurant districts.
