The people I met there were the one bright spot. I made some great connections with guests that I won't forget, but the stay came at a cost. The host was unpleasant, rules got broken casually, the WiFi was terrible, and the front doors opened and shut at random hours. The restrooms were dirty, with leaking pipes and grimy surroundings. San Cristobal de las Casas has plenty of downtown hostels with good hosts, fair prices, and decent cleanliness. This one didn't measure up. If you're willing to put up with all that nonsense, book at your own risk, and keep your expectations below ground level. Otherwise, turn around and run.

Gladys went out of her way to make sure I had what I needed: a fair price, a clean place, friendly service, and hot water, which matters in the cold mountains. I’d come from a bad stay at another hostel, and some travelers I met at a bar pointed me here. The place smelled nice, the beds were comfortable, and there was a kitchen. I stayed six nights, and Ernest, her kind assistant, had breakfast ready at 9 each morning. His pancakes are some of the best in town! I liked lounging in the garden hammocks in the sun, and I joined one of Gladys' tour packages. A van picked us up for a boat ride through Sumidero Canyon, where we saw wildlife and waterfalls. The day was organized perfectly, and we got back to the hotel that evening. Another time, her son booked me a tour to Palenque. The Maya temples and pyramids are a must-see. I enjoyed the good food, company, and vibes in this mountain town.

Gladys, who owns the hostel, is an energetic, colorful, eccentric person. She was helpful and accommodating, and always up for tea and a chat. I stayed for a week, and it was the best hospitality I've experienced in Mexico. The peaceful atmosphere worked well for meditation, yoga, or reading, and Gladys offered meditation too. The kitchen was fully stocked with a fridge, utensils, dishes, pots and pans, filtered water, and private cupboards for food. There were plenty of places to eat, either at the large dining-room table or outside among the courtyard garden tables. My room was cozy, clean, and inviting. The WiFi was strong and reliable, and there were always a TV and DVDs available. The location is very central, near good cafes, markets, shops, and restaurants, and San Cristobal is charming. Bring warm clothes, since the mountain nights and early mornings get cold. I'll come back next year!

The photos give a very misleading impression. The restrooms reek, the pipes leak, and bedsheets aren't changed between guests. The host is rude and absorbed in her own arguments, completely out of touch with reality. Book with caution.

Welcoming staff and good value for the money. We spent three days here, and I recommend the place.
