Maison Couturier, San Rafael, a Member of Design Hotels

The grounds are beautiful and the pool is gorgeous, but some details feel unfinished. I liked the interesting vibe the design creates, though the bathroom setup put me off. I understand the idea of an open bathroom, even if it’s not for me, but the toilet really should have a door. For a romantic weekend, having your partner hear and smell everything is unpleasant. It comes across as a cheap way to save on construction, and to me it’s enough reason not to come back. An architect or landlord who approves that should lose their title immediately. Reception didn’t seem trained and wasn’t useful when I asked about planning activities. The person seemed to know nothing about the area. I noticed the spa building, but nobody told me what services were available there. The restaurant was okay. It could be an exceptional boutique hotel, but when we stayed, it was just lovely grounds for a few nights.

The place is lovely and the food is really good. On our first visit, dinner took more than an hour and a half because the kitchen is tiny and only one person can cook at a time. If you arrive while hotel guests are eating, restaurant customers may be served last. I’d call ahead and ask for Agustin, the restaurant manager. We returned later and had a perfect meal. We made a reservation and were the only ones there, so there was no wait, and the food arrived on time and tasted delicious.

We had a wonderful day relaxing by the pools, one deep and one shallow, with lovely service. Alex took great care of us, and everyone was friendly. The place is peaceful, surrounded by lush greenery, and I loved the antique furnishings and vintage touches throughout. It felt like traveling back in time. We visited on a sunny day after rain, and there were lots of mosquitoes, so bring repellent. Luckily, they sell bug spray in the store.

The weak WiFi was the only real drawback. Otherwise, the hotel is beautifully designed among orange, lime, and banana groves, with lovely grounds, tasty food, and attentive, friendly wait staff. I’d definitely visit again.
