Betel Nut Lodge - Adult Only

The room was clean every day, and the internet worked reliably. Once we figured out the shower, there was plenty of warm water. The staff member we met was a nice young man who brought tea after check-in, though he spoke little English, so we couldn’t really talk through our concerns or get useful sightseeing advice. We stayed four nights, but didn’t feel comfortable returning to the room to relax after a day out. It was cramped, the beds were smaller than expected and uncomfortable, and the walls were badly cracked, with chipped, discolored paint, mold, and exposed wiring. I understand it’s a historic property, but that condition wasn’t acceptable for what we paid, over US$50 a night. The location was the best part: under a 10-minute walk to the popular Armenian shopping street, with a large mall nearby.

In a colonial/pre-war style building, the hotel was quiet and cozy, and Armenian Street was an easy walk away. The staff were kind and friendly, and brought tea to the room. There’s just one keycard per room, and the front desk isn’t open 24/7. Still, it was a pleasant place for a short stay.

I loved the tea and local sweets they served around 17:00 if you happened to be in the room. The price was very competitive, and the room stayed at a comfortable temperature with both a ceiling fan and AC. Everything was clean, and the bed was super comfortable. It’s a beautiful hotel in the town center, in an old Chinese house that’s been renovated while keeping its antique feel, original pavements and walls, and vintage furniture.

There are lots of local food choices and attractions close by, and the location is great. I stayed in Room A and was happy with everything except the weak water pressure. Most of the staff were foreign workers with limited English, so we sometimes had to repeat ourselves to understand one another. They were friendly, responsible, and careful in their service, and I appreciated their effort. It was my first stay in an old-style hotel.
