Sepilok Nature Resort

We spent two nights here so we could visit the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries, just a couple of minutes away on foot. The hotel’s tucked into a stunning jungle setting. The staff were friendly, the food was nice, and I can’t fault the stay.

I thought the rooms were lovely, so I don’t really understand all the complaints about them. The service could be better, though, and food and drinks were seriously expensive. Drinks came to 40 ringgit each plus 8% tax, which felt like American bar or restaurant prices. That’s normal in America, high by European standards, and way too much for Malaysia. The servings were also half the size you’d usually get in those places. I was surprised breakfast wasn’t part of the room price and had to be added separately. For what we paid per night, including it would have been an easy and sensible choice, especially since most places do. Just my opinion.

I loved sitting on the deck and watching sea otters on the lake and colourful birds. An Orangutan even came to visit! The place feels rustic and charming, right among Borneo’s wildlife, with the comforts you need. My room was cleaned and the bed made each day, with fresh water left out. The bed was really comfortable, and I slept soundly every night. Staff were attentive and friendly, and the food was very cheap compared with the UK. The Orangutan and Sun Bear sanctuaries are within a five-minute walk. The rainforest discovery centre is about 20 minutes away on foot, or around 5 ringgit by Grab. I’m surprised by the negative reviews. If you want a pristine five-star resort with a spa, this probably isn’t for you, but for a stay surrounded by Borneo’s nature with home comforts, I’d recommend it.

We had a smooth airport transfer and check-in. The location alone makes this place worth considering. It’s a short walk to the Orangutan and Sun Bear centers, while the Rain Forest discovery center is farther, about 1 mile away. The first half of that walk is along the road, but we felt safe and it wasn’t bad. Our room was comfortable. Meals cost extra but were reasonably priced. The restaurant isn’t open all day, though it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a different menu for each. We liked the food and found a decent range of options. The fresh juices and teas were especially nice, and there’s a fairly long cocktail list. From our table overlooking the lake, we spotted several birds, which we enjoyed as amateur birders. I’d recommend staying here.
