B&B, Hospedaje La Penita

Liz's lovely personality gives the hostel a really cozy, home-like feel. The rooms were great, very clean, and had mosquito nets. Breakfast was perfect, and different each day. There were lots of bugs around the sink, so be aware, though I don't think you'll find a hostel with none. I'd absolutely stay here again if I return to Ometepe. Thanks to the lovely people at the hostel for having us!

Meals here are generous and delicious, and the mother is an excellent cook. They took my celiac disease seriously and made special gluten-free meals for me at no extra charge beyond the regular meal price. I'd strongly recommend eating at the hostel if you can. The place has a calm, family feel and a quiet but central location. Parking for a car or bike was easy. The clean rooms are well furnished with fans and desks, and the bathrooms and showers were clean too. The service was excellent. English, Spanish, Dutch, and German are spoken.

We booked three nights at La Penita and stayed for six. After a day out exploring, it was lovely to come back to Marc and Luzette greeting us so warmly. As long-time travelers, that homestay feeling made us feel like family. The hostel is peaceful and has such a warm atmosphere. It felt safe enough in this remote location to leave the door open for a cool breeze, and we slept really well. It was the coolest I felt in Nicaragua. That made the stay even better.

The family has clearly put a lot of care and hard work into this place, and the hostel feels really comfortable. It's simple but has what you need, including tasty, authentic homemade food at a good price. The owners speak English and are extremely friendly and helpful with island advice. They told us about a beautiful beach close by that felt almost private, where we were by ourselves apart from a few locals. I wouldn't have found it on my own. Such a lovely hostel, and an even lovelier host!
