The view of the Amstel River was a lovely bonus, and the price and location both felt reasonable. It took under half an hour to walk to Amsterdam Central, and tram #4 stopped within three blocks. I was told tram #25 no longer runs. Our room was fairly roomy and very clean, with small but comfortable beds. The manager was courteous, and the weekend and Monday and Tuesday nights were quiet. The old exterior and steep, worn stairs might put you off, but I thought it was worth staying here if you don't expect luxury. The deep bathtub was awkward to climb in and out of. There’s no air conditioning or window screens, so it could get warm in summer.

The river view is really lovely, and the rooms have a quaint setup in a regular apartment. Two rooms share a bathroom with a tub and shower, plus there’s a separate toilet. The stairs are steep, and street noise does come through. When we stayed in the first week of February, our floor had no hot water and the heaters weren’t working. Our host quickly brought portable replacement heaters and said we could shower one floor up. They were very bright, though, so we couldn’t keep warm and have a dark room at the same time. I’d suggest this “Bed and Coffee” to backpackers and younger travelers, but it didn’t suit our work trip to Google. The price felt a little high for what was provided. Thanks for the hospitality.

This isn’t right in the center, but walking about 15 minutes gets you into old Amsterdam. I liked the relative calm here. The best views are on the main canal side. It’s an old building with steep stairs and no elevator, so it won’t work for everyone.

The shared kitchen is a nice little space and has the essentials, and the river facing rooms have soft beds. Tony, the caretaker, is a gentleman who tries hard to look after the place. Still, the rooms felt far too small for the price listed online, and the website photos make them look bigger. The shared toilets are small too, the neighbors are very sensitive to noise, and cleaning only happens every 4-5 days unless you pay an extra €25. There aren’t many outlets, and they’re in awkward spots for charging devices. One night the power on the whole floor went out and stayed off until morning, after I had to report it myself. Later, Mr. John emailed my booking agent complaining about our low ratings and what he called false complaints. I wouldn’t recommend it for young people coming to Amsterdam for a weekend or longer. Couples might like it, though the steep stairs up to the first-floor reception could be tough with luggage. I hope this helps. This is my unbiased account of staying at Amstel River View.

The views were amazing, and inside it was warm and really clean. The place itself is quite nice. The stairs are very steep and hard to manage, especially with luggage. Smoking is against the house rules, but the smell of weed inside was pretty obvious.
