At night, Dam Square is a magnificent sight, and there was quite a crowd when we visited. Our guide told us that important national events are often held there. The Square is in what feels like Amsterdam’s bustling heart, with spectacular historic landmarks nearby, including the Royal Palace and the National Monument. It’s also a transport hub and a busy shopping area.

The square is always busy, with street performers, locals, tourists, and plenty of pigeons. It’s great for people-watching and photos at any time of day. Dam Square (De Dam) has historic buildings around it, including the Royal Palace, the New Church, De Bijenkorf and the National Monument. It’s an easy walk or tram ride from Amsterdam Centraal, and a good place to begin exploring the city, with shopping streets and canals within walking distance.

With historic buildings, street performers, and people constantly moving around, Dam Square is full of energy. I loved soaking up the Amsterdam atmosphere there and watching the crowds. A must-visit spot.

I make a point of visiting Dam Square every time I’m in Amsterdam. It brings historic architecture and modern city life together, and the atmosphere and surroundings are beautiful, with cool air and plenty of tourists going about their day. It’s right in the city center, about a 5 minutes walk from Centraal Station. You’ll find the Royal Palace, National Monument, shopping centers, and entertainment nearby, plus Kalverstraat and Red Light District close by. Don’t miss it when you’re in Amsterdam.

There’s lots of shopping and food vendors just steps from Dam Square, and it’s a great place to take in Amsterdam’s energy, people-watch, or grab a bite while exploring. The open space and architecture are beautiful. Massive, vibrant, and full of life, it’s a must-visit!
