Sylwia and Melanie at the front desk were the highlight of my stay. They were kind, professional, and always ready with advice or help to make things go smoothly. The Canal House was also a great base for all the things I had planned, with so much within walking distance. My room was tucked up in the rafters, comfortable and nicely furnished, with a special view of Amsterdam's skies, sometimes moody, sometimes sunny. I loved having Nespresso coffee each morning, and breakfast in the elegant salon overlooking the garden was wonderful. I came hoping to get a feel for this beautiful, unique town, and the stay really delivered.

The rooms are on the small side, but full of charm, and the beds were very comfortable. We had breakfast brought to the room, and it arrived on time with hot coffee. Over our three nights at Canal House, the welcome was excellent: staff carried our bags up and showed us around the shared spaces. They also did our laundry and kept one of our big suitcases while we visited another city between stays. We know some reviews mention no air conditioning, but a quick Google search about Amsterdam gives you a fair idea of what to expect. Everyone was helpful and welcoming, and the service was amazing. We had a great time and will definitely stay again when we return to Amsterdam.

The room was roomy and the bed comfortable, but there were too many problems for a 4-star hotel charging over €500 per night. In the extreme heat, the air conditioning didn't work at all, and the only solution was a basic fan. The Wi-Fi kept dropping, so I had to switch to mobile data. The bathroom felt poorly maintained and wasn't practical, with tiny sinks and almost nowhere for toiletries. A glass shower door was missing, with its fittings still visible along the bathtub edge. I skipped breakfast after seeing the breakfast room, which didn't look appealing. This hotel needs serious refurbishment and much more attention to maintenance and guest comfort.

My stay was fine for a few nights at the end of October 2025, until my room was robbed while I was out enjoying my last day in Amsterdam. Two fine leather bags, two bottles of fragrance, and about $200 were gone. There was no sign of a break-in, and given that and the timing, I suspect staff may have been involved. Look elsewhere.

Canal House, Amsterdam 22-24 August 2025 I won't return, and I wouldn't send friends staying in the 'Nine Streets' area here. We booked because Mr & Mrs Smith endorsed the hotel and it was recognised as a 'small luxury hotel' of the world. That reputation doesn't fit our experience, and I'm surprised Mr & Mrs Smith endorse it, since the hotels they usually recommend are to notch. The biggest issue was a family blanket I left behind when we checked out on Sunday. It was a 1m x 1m heirloom I'd had since childhood, old and a little tatty, but it meant the world to me. I contacted the hotel straight away, devastated and anxious to get it back. We never did. They said they'd look into it, but there was no urgency, action, or accountability. We were repeatedly told things like 'Sorry, they're not in', 'Not sure who's handling it', or 'We'll get back to you'. They claimed they would check the bins, though I'm sure they didn't, and after about a week said it had probably gone to the laundry. Emails said they were doing their best, but when I replied, I got no answer because the person I was contacting was on annual leave. Someone else should have stepped in. They wouldn't give me the laundry contact details despite repeated requests, and hid behind generic emails so I couldn't talk to anyone. When my husband kept calling, they became abrupt and rude and asked him to stop. For a small boutique hotel, I expected some personal service. Instead, the management felt dismissive and distant. Once you're gone, you're gone. Housekeeping was another concern. On Saturday we had to ask three times for the room to be made up and our water replenished. It finally happened at 5pm while we were in the room, so we had to sit outside on the garden terrace. The hotel decor looked tired when we arrived, though the room itself was nice enough. A Trustpilot review also mentioned a guest finding a set of students' books under their bed, which makes it fair to question housekeeping standards at a hotel that positions itself at the higher end of the market. From our experience, the place isn't well managed. We won't ever go back. The blanket was never found, and the whole thing left me feeling bereft.
