The location is great, and the 20% bar discount downstairs was a nice perk. That’s all I can praise. We arrived four hours early and nobody mentioned a problem, but when we came back to check in, we were told the six-bed female dorm we’d booked had flooded. They put us in a 16-person female capsule room instead. It wasn’t what we reserved and was about €300 cheaper. When we raised that, staff said, “It’s like airplanes, they change depending on dates.” I couldn’t make sense of that. Booking.com was frustrated too, and after contacting the hostel, I got only €12 back in my wallet. The room was cramped, with more people than we were comfortable sharing with. Every little movement made noise: the tiny cot mattresses sounded plasticky, and even shifting in bed woke me up daily. The walkway light came on at full brightness if a curtain moved. My under-capsule locker barely held my things, and its broken lock meant I had to thread it through the cage wires, as reception suggested. That left enough room for a hand to reach in, so I never felt my things were safe. The showers were often dirty and the rainfall shower pressure was so weak that washing my hair took ages. After we complained to the hostel and Booking, the staff seemed off with my friend and me. I don’t think it was fair, since we had every right to report the problems. There was also a leak from pipes above the lockers outside our room, soaking the floor and people getting their belongings. We told reception on Thursday night, but by Sunday morning, when we left, nothing had been done. I included photos. We were told both our floor and capsule room were female-only, but by Saturday men were going in and out of the room opposite. I wasn’t happy about that, or about guests not being told if the floor arrangement had changed. The breakfast deal advertised with the Spar across the road wasn’t as described either. For €5, it was the driest, smallest sandwich or roll, plus a banana or apple, with no tea or coffee offered anymore. Staff weren’t accommodating about any of this, and I’m not pleased with how it was handled. I’d recommend staying somewhere else.

The location was great, and the price was reasonable, so I’d stay here again. The beds were comfortable, the employees I spoke with were friendly, and there was a discount at the connected bar. As a solo traveler, I liked that the stacked beds are more like curtained cubbies than ordinary bunk beds in an open room. I didn’t have any trouble with noise, and having a women-only bathroom on my floor was a plus. It got a little chilly in the room, though my cubby stayed warm. A sheet as well as the comforter would’ve been useful for staying covered without getting too hot. There may have been one and I just didn’t notice. There’s no elevator, and the stairs are steep, but I only had a backpack and it wasn’t a problem. Those were the only things I noticed.

It was my first time in a capsule dorm, and I enjoyed it enough that it didn’t put me off these places at all. Since then, I’ve stayed in others and can say there’s nothing here I’d complain about. The location is amazing, the modern design and cleanliness stood out, and the young staff were helpful and alert. I never felt unsafe.

I was pleasantly surprised by my first hostel stay. The place was clean and nice, with fresh sheets and a comfortable bed. Shared showers and toilets were clean too. There’s a locker in the room, and reception can rent you a lock and towel if you need them. It’s right in the centre, with a shop nearby and easy access from the train station. The street is busy, so if you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. I’m used to that kind of noise, so it didn’t bother me. I’ll stay here again next time I’m in Amsterdam.

Being right among the attractions, with a bar downstairs, is a real plus. The train is about a 10-minute walk away, and you can rent lockers for luggage at check-in or check-out. The bathrooms were very clean, and the room was spacious. Each capsule has a light and outlet, plus there’s space for belongings, but bring your own lock. They share local restaurant discounts at check-in too, and it’s affordable and close to a lot. There’s no kitchen for getting water, though you might be able to ask at the bar if it’s open. One annoyance: the room light turns on automatically at full brightness, so arriving late or getting up early can wake people. The capsule curtains help, but don’t block it completely.
