Hoksbergen

I’ve stayed here twice and would come back. The beds are very comfortable, the hotel is clean, and the staff are helpful. Breakfast has coffee, yogurt and pastries available until 11:00 AM. It’s centrally located, walkable to everything and just a 15-minute walk from the train station. The area felt safe. The canal-side rooms are worth it for the view and sunrise, and upper floor windows open. Just know the small canal rooms and their bathrooms are very small, so you may need to leave the bathroom door open or upgrade if you want more space. There’s no elevator and the stairs are very steep, so request the first floor if that’s a concern. I stayed in August; with the windows open the temperature felt fine, and bugs and mosquitos weren’t an issue. No air conditioning.

The room was nothing like the photos on booking.com. We were given a prison-like cell without even an outside window, and couldn’t stay there. Would they have stayed in that room themselves? They stole our money. Don’t come here, ever. There’s no security either, since anyone can open the front door. These people have lost all sense of humanity. We’ll file complaints with every relevant authority!

The location is really good and it was fairly cheap, but the stay was pretty disappointing. We booked a double room, yet the bed was more like a king-size single. There was no floor space, so I had to open my suitcase on the bed, move it away, then move it again to sleep. We left our things downstairs in what we thought was reception, but it closes at 6 and nobody told us. We had to leave early the next morning, before it reopened at 8, so we couldn’t get our stuff back in time.

The room was really small, and climbing the stairs was challenging for us, especially up high. Still, it was clean, had a canal view, and the reception lady was so kind and helpful. The location was great, and we had a good experience overall. I wish they’d told us on the first day about the tea and coffee at reception. We didn’t know there was coffee at the entrance, and only spotted the little information note on the desk while packing on our last day. Thanks a lot.
