Hotel Il Fiore

The room was okay and comfortable, the water was fine, and the shower was warm. It’s cheap and cheerful, though you’re not paying to spend time in the room. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs: the rooms at the back face a local church, and its bells ring on the hour and half-hour.

The night before I arrived, I called to confirm my booking. They told me to ring the same number when I was outside. I got to the hotel at 9 p.m. and called repeatedly for an hour and a half, but nobody answered. There’s no reception. Just after midnight, I finally got a text asking if I was still there. By then I’d booked another hotel because I’d been left stranded at night in Amsterdam. The next day, they emailed to say their phone had been stolen. I’d booked months ahead to get a central location, but ended up paying more for somewhere outside the centre. I booked in May, when it was called Il Fiore and had good reviews. It’s now called Hotel Fossa. Don’t waste your time here.

The room was clean enough, and the bathroom was great with strong shower pressure. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The hotel is perfectly placed on the edge of a residential area, with great cafes all around and a less touristy feel. We could walk all over the city from there.
