Balestrand Hotel

The fjord view from both rooms was lovely, and we got lucky with the weather. I found it hard to sleep because the sunsets and sunrises were so unbelievably pretty, and I hated missing them. The rooms are simple and okay, though a bit dated. The bathrooms could especially use some modernising for around €150 a night without breakfast. The bar by reception and the outdoor area were fantastic. The woman working the evening we arrived was welcoming, explained everything, and gave us good dinner recommendations. The next morning, the staff member seemed to be having a rough day and kept looking at her computer instead of engaging with guests. The coffee and fresh croissant were a pleasant morning treat, but I wouldn’t count it as breakfast. For a proper breakfast, Balestrand has an arrangement with another hotel a few steps away.

The rooms are basic, but that doesn’t take away from this being a great choice. You get stunning views straight up the fjord, and the staff are so friendly and accommodating.

We arrived in early July and had those endless sunsets over the fjord. It was so peaceful and restorative. This is a clean, hip four-floor hotel that feels suited to all ages, and they’re working to make it a cultural center for the community and area. There’s a small kitchen and a bar, though breakfast is mostly just coffee. A handful of little diners are about a five-minute walk away. It’s a gem.

The fjord views blew us away, and the hotel was a cozy, affordable option compared with other places in town. We visited in late April, during the quiet off-season, and there were only a few other parties staying there. The staff were warm and gave us great tips for making the most of our time in Balestrand. We enjoyed the complimentary morning coffee and croissants, and the lounge was a lovely place to hang out at night. We had the best stay and would absolutely come back.
