Rjukan’s history is right there in the hotel. It’s an old company building from the time the town was built about 110 years ago, and you can sit in the salon looking out over the garden where people once planned ways to draw power from the huge surrounding landscape. The town’s hydroelectric power, hydrogen and heavy water brought it into the WWII race for the atomic bomb, and into the brave efforts to stop the German occupiers from getting there first. The whole town is a World Heritage site, and the hotel has been preserved along with it. Staying here puts you in that history, with good food, personal and friendly service, and a few properly restful hours. It’s an easy place to remember. The feeling of exclusivity comes from a quiet mix of Norwegian hospitality and history, not money. The hotel sits in a green valley between very high mountains, so high that the sun doesn’t reach down in winter. A great place to stay in a destination worth visiting.

The new art makes a lively contrast with the villa’s fascinating past, and Chef Bård’s dinner was delicious, with excellent wine pairings. Kenneth and Morten were lovely hosts, and I felt at home as soon as I stepped inside to the fireplace, champagne and candlelit living room. I came for a Valentine’s Day study trip with upnorway.com. It’s a lovely choice for a romantic stay, and also well placed if you want to climb Gaustatoppen, get to the Hardangervidda Plateau, or explore the heavy water history at Vemork.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, and dinner in the restaurant was great. It’s a lovely historic hotel where you can enjoy the early 1900s style and still stay comfortably.

Dinner was good, but the room really let the stay down. Dust everywhere made it hard for us to sleep. There was dirt in the sink, dead flies by the window and sticky patches under the bed. For this price, I expected a lot better.
