The Imperial sits in a quiet alley off Amrit marg, right in the heart of the city. Thamel can be full of cheap hotels with high prices, but this family-run place feels refreshing and nostalgic. It's been here thirty years, and is one of the last spots that still has the old-school feel of Thamel before the neighborhood tried to go up market. They'll remember you when you come back. Rooms are simple, clean, and bright, with hot showers and soft sheets. You can watch the sun set over the city from the rooftop garden. The marble floors and ornate woodcarvings in the lobby are lovely details. Wake up to birds, bells, and incense, then step into an alley where people say hi as you go looking for tea. It gives you a taste of Kathmandu's quieter pleasures. If you want to explore the city off the beaten path, ask for Jai at the front desk. He's a local and an experienced tour guide, with formidable knowledge of the city's culture and history. Hiring him for a day to show you places missing from tourist guide books is a great way to get into the heart of the city.

Excellent value for money. I always stay here when I'm in Kathmandu. The owner is friendly, the staff are very helpful, and the area is quiet. The hectic, noisy streets of Thamel are only a two-minute walk away.
