Kathmandu Sunny Hotel

It's a quiet spot at night, with clean, roomy rooms and strong WiFi. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, and Durbar Square is about a ten-minute walk. The people running the hotel are kind and helpful, and they can also arrange trekking tours through their agency. I'd definitely stay again.

Just a note that the hotel has new ownership, so older reviews may not reflect the current place. My daughter and I had booked one night at Kathmandu Sunny Hotel before leaving Nepal, but she became very sick the night before we arrived and was still unwell in the morning. The proprietor pointed me to the nearest pharmacy when I went out early. Later, when I explained she couldn't manage breakfast, they offered a free late checkout so she could rest until it was time for our flight. In the afternoon, staff brought us warm water and were genuinely concerned about how we were doing. It's a small family business, and that feeling carried over to how they treated us. The room was clean, the beds very comfortable, and the price was excellent. The wall unit for heat and AC helped while my daughter was ill, and this was the best hot shower I had during our Nepal stay. WiFi was even better than at a much more expensive hotel we had booked at the start of the trip. We didn't get to explore much nearby, but the location seemed excellent: attractions and shopping are an easy walk away, while the hotel is far enough from the main roads to stay quiet even during the day. A comfortable, affordable choice if you want staff who look after your needs.

It's a clean, family-run hotel within walking distance of Thamel, the tourist area. The heat in my room came on sporadically, though, and I couldn't get it warm by US standards. I stayed eight days and the room wasn't serviced once. I'm not sure if that's normal in Nepal. On my first day I asked about local sights. They insisted I take their car and driver at a much higher cost than a taxi, saying it would be better. They also offered to have one of the owners come along as a guide, with a tip for her. I didn't have much time for sightseeing that day, so I went with their suggestion, but I was annoyed they didn't give me other workable options. I've traveled the world and felt safe in Nepal, and would've been fine with a taxi. The owner who came along as a “tour guide” didn't manage the timing well enough to see all the attractions or account for opening times. We waited for one temple to open and only made it to three of the four planned stops. I don't mind paying for service, but if you offer guiding, do the research and make it a good experience.

I'm a solo woman traveler who cares about cleanliness and a little comfort, and this place delivered. It's right in the heart of Thamel, with very friendly, helpful staff and clean sheets, towels, and rooms. The bed was really comfy, the bathroom and shower were great, and there's both heating and cooling. Everything felt new, and for the price I don't see how you could beat it. I can't understand the lower ratings. Nothing negative to say. A+.
