The staff were friendly and helpful. We asked for walking ideas, and they suggested the Alex Knob walk to the Rata viewpoint. It took four hours, and the view was worth the climb. You need to be reasonably fit and wear good footwear. We stayed for two nights in mid-March. The only room available when we booked was the ground-floor accessible one, with a kitchenette and wet room bathroom. We could park right outside. The room was immaculately clean, the large bed was very comfortable, and the efficient heater kept it warm on the slightly cool mornings. We ordered the continental breakfast, delivered the evening before with cereal, fruit and toast. Perfect for us. Definitely recommend this small motel for a short stay.

We were travelling around NZ for a whole month and appreciated having a hot plate, microwave, toaster and other room facilities. The room was very clean, with a beautiful mountain view despite the rainy weather, and the location couldn’t have been more convenient. We checked into Bella Vista in Franz Josef after hours on Christmas Eve, and check-in was smooth. The next day Jim, I think that was his name, gave us a map and some brief information about the accommodation and attractions to visit. Would recommend!

The 25sm room was cosy and adequate for a one night stop-over in Franz Josef. I appreciated the senior rate for the motel unit. Great value for money, recommend.

We enjoyed our time in FJ and felt a real sense of achievement after walking from the accommodation to Fox Glazier, then returning after choosing one of the shorter walks from the car park to see the Glazier. It takes good walking legs, and there are lovely rainforest sections. My husband and I stayed two nights in a compact studio. It was compact, just as stated, and neat, tidy and clean on arrival. Standard small motor inn accommodation. The location was good, though FJ is a very small town so everything is well placed. There are several good places to eat right next door. The shower head was small, but the water pressure was very good. On the downside, the carpeted bedroom and kitchenette area wasn’t vacuumed on the second day. There was no separate kitchenette sink, so washing dishes in the bathroom with the toilet nearby was unpleasant. Kitchen utensils were limited, which unfortunately seems to be a feature of NZ motor inns.

The host took time to tell us about the Franz Josef area and places to see, and made us feel so welcome and special. The unit was extremely well appointed, very spacious and clean. The location was quiet, just one street back from the main road. Best motel I’ve ever stayed in, including other Bella Vista ones. Highly recommend if you’re travelling in the Franz Josef area.
