The kitchen was well equipped, and they make soup every night. There are historic photos around, which are a nice touch. The hostel has a really welcoming feel, and the rooms are clean and solidly built. Even when the whole town lost power, we stayed warm and cosy all night.

This family-run hostel really makes you feel welcome, not like you're just buying a bed for a night or two. The host knows your name throughout your stay, and the whole place feels cozy. There's clearly a lot of thought put into helping guests connect. The staff are amazing, and you get free vegetable soup and popcorn, plus a hot tub. Thanks so much!

The hot tub is awesome, the price is very good, and the location is great. Rooms are large, clean and have comfortable beds, with charging ports that are easy to reach. The kitchen is clean, spacious and has plenty of good equipment. Toilets and showers are clean and work properly, and there's a good communal room and movie room. The owner and staff are professional, polite and friendly. Thanks to them. If I come to Franz Josef again, I'll stay here.

The owner is incredibly kind and always looking for ways to help. The hostel feels cozy and welcoming, and it's really well equipped. There's a clean hot tub, plus free soup and popcorn. This was the best hostel I stayed at in New Zealand. Definitely recommend staying here.

The common areas, including the kitchen and living room, are roomy and comfortable. The owner was very kind and friendly, and we had a wonderful afternoon relaxing in the free hot tub. They also offered free popcorn and vegetable soup. It was a great stay at a very affordable price. Highly recommended!
