The owner was welcoming and friendly, and the spot was handy for walking my dog. She apologised after the incident and said she would speak to the other dog’s owner. Coming back from our walk, though, we found a big dog roaming loose. It barked and growled as we tried to get back to our room, so I waited outside until it went back into its room rather than risk it attacking my dog. I love dogs, but that was intimidating and not what I expected from a 4 star motel. The other guests gave me the impression the place might be used a bit for emergency accommodation. I was travelling through with my dog and stayed one night. At $200, including a $30 dog surcharge, it was the most expensive motel of our whole South Island trip and my least favourite. The room was tidy, but very small, with just one sink in the bathroom serving the kitchenette too. I'm not sure I'd stay again. I've stayed in some brilliant dog friendly holiday homes in Hanmer before that actually cost less per night.
