Kaikoura Boutique Hotel

We had a fantastic stay in the smaller courtyard unit. It was fresh and clean, and the flower filled, tree shaded courtyard made a lovely spot to enjoy the outdoors. It was peaceful and quiet too. For us, a boutique place should offer something different, and this hotel did. The breakfast room and lounge had beautiful views of the Kaikoura coast, and Johnny, Deb (and Harry) were always around for a chat. We’re a couple of North Island Kiwis exploring the upper South Island, and this was a good place to rest before heading home. Thanks. Leo & Gaylene

The only thing this place has going for it is the ocean view. We’ve stayed twice in different rooms, and both visits were really disappointing. We came back only because there was almost no other accommodation available. The courtyard deluxe room cost $424 and wasn’t clean. The appliances were cheap rubbish, and there were very long black hairs left in the shower from a previous guest. This was nowhere near a four star hotel, more like a cabin at a campground. The male owner was rude and snappy, and the car parking was terrible.

We left after one night and stayed somewhere else. We’d booked for longer, but when we reported the persistent musty, stagnant water smell in room No. 7 and politely asked to move, our concerns were dismissed. The only response was to pour bleach down the shower drain. We asked for a partial refund for the unused nights and were refused. We didn’t press the issue because it seemed clear that further discussion would achieve nothing. This is a bed and breakfast, in my view, not a boutique hotel. The price felt massively inflated and misleading, as the listing suggested accommodation in the main house, while the rooms were actually very small cabins in the back garden. The smell didn’t improve with ventilation or cleaning. Based on other reviews, this experience seems common. People work hard to afford their holidays, and it’s terrible to feel that guests are being misled, overcharged, and given less than promised. This establishment doesn’t meet the standards I’d expect of a genuine boutique hotel.

The location was stunning, and our room was clean. We enjoyed two nights here with pleasant, knowledgeable hosts, plus a tasty breakfast and a nice chat. We’d stay again if, and when we’re lucky enough to return to beautiful Kaikōura.
