Kaikoura Gateway Motor Lodge

The room was a little dated, but it had what we needed for a one night stopover, including a small, well equipped kitchen where we cooked simple spaghetti. It was quite clean, and the heater kept us warm all night. Kathy, the owner, was friendly and gave us recommendations we appreciated. A couple of things stood out: there was a bad smell when we first came in, though airing the room with the windows open for two hours cleared it. We were also right by the roadside, so it got noisier at night. We even heard a helicopter, which may bother light sleepers. Still, it was a convenient stay with the essentials covered.

We had room 8, with a separate bedroom, a big shower room, and a well equipped kitchen. It’s only about a five minute walk to the centre, and we’d definitely return to this excellent motor lodge next time we’re in Kaikoura. It’s right beside SH1, so there’s some traffic noise, but don’t let that put you off.

We were in town for a weekend event, and the room had everything we needed: beds, a kitchen with a fridge, oven, stovetop, tea and coffee, a small TV with Sky, and a full bathroom. Check-in was easy, and the staff were very helpful whenever we needed something. When we got stuck, the owners helped extend our stay and let us use a large room so we could work remotely. Amazing service. We’ll be back next year.

I’ll always remember how much they helped us during the 2016 quakes. I love this place, outstanding in every way. Big cars take up a lot of room, but it was fun watching them park, lol.
