The sunrise woke me at 6am because the drapes were broken, which was rough when I had a long day ahead. I also wasn’t comfortable leaving my camera gear in the room. The pin codes on the doors seemed barely better than 12345, so it feels like one person posting them online could let anyone know how to break in. Even a key lock for individual rooms shouldn’t be too much to ask. There was a thick layer of dust on the window sills, with dead flies scattered over it. The dated decor made it impossible to know whether the place was old-fashioned or simply hadn’t been cleaned since the 1940s. Staff were rude. The website calls it “social clean accommodation offering a friendly environment,” but that didn’t match my stay at all. It was only $50 for the night, but I wouldn’t stay again even if the price dropped below $5. I posted this review on their website two weeks ago and it never appeared, so I’m guessing the admin filters reviews. Not good at all.

We liked this place enough to add another night, even though we’d planned to streamline our trip from Dunedin back to Christchurch. It’s easily my favorite backpacker stay ever. The hostel feels fun and welcoming, and it was clean. Our room was spacious and bright, with big windows. There are instruments in the lounge to play and a huge Jenga set, about a meter tall before you start. The painting setup at check-in is a brilliant idea: paints, brushes and canvas or white boards are provided. I’d never painted before, but gave it a go and made something that looked like a small child’s first attempt with paintbrushes. It was still fun. Good paintings by past guests are displayed around the hostel, and boards that don’t turn out are painted white and reused. The place deserves six stars.

I was there for a week for work. The place has a cool feel, with lots of pictures and instruments. The centre is a bit far away, though. The staff change all the time, so I can’t really say anything about them.

The prices were among the best around, and the backpackers has a funky, fun atmosphere. It’s a good place to stay, though a little away from central Oamaru.

Just stayed one night and it was really cozy, with an at-home feel and lots of art around. Nice spot for a very good price.
