Federation House

The room had everything we needed, so we didn’t have to ask Roger for anything after he showed us around the beautiful home. Every room is pretty and full of character, and most have lovely views. Ours had its own ensuite bathroom. There’s a nice sunroom for drinks or dinner in the evening, and breakfast in the morning. We’d happily come back. Roger greeted us at the door and was available if we needed him.

The little blue penguins are within walking distance, and there’s free on-street parking as well as some parking on the property. The shared lounge and breakfast spaces make it easy to chat with other guests and staff, so it seems especially good for solo travellers. My bathroom was a bit tiny, though I didn’t mind. It could be awkward for tall or bigger people, or for couples. Each room seems quite unique, so I can’t say if all the bathrooms are the same. The owner and staff were as charming as the place itself. If you like clean, modern decor, this probably isn’t for you. It feels more like your favourite auntie’s living room. I think it was the best hotel bed I’ve ever slept in.

Breakfast was lovely, with a huge choice of teas and coffees, bread and all kinds of spreads, cereals, yogurt and fruit. The owner was sweet and knew a lot about the area. We stayed in the Roger MacCaw room, where the beds were clean and comfortable and felt like home. My son had his own little tucked-away space, built into the attic and reached through a miniature door at the back of my room. It was a really fun find, and I’d definitely add it to the must-do list.

Roger is really friendly and serves a decent breakfast. Our room had a great view over Oamaru and all the essentials, including an ensuite, a comfy bed and a mini fridge/freezer. The penguins are just a short walk away. A great little spot with a really cool look.
