The cottage was delightful and had everything we needed. In the warm weather, though, a fan would’ve been welcome. Breakfast was fabulous and brought out with a smile, and the location made it easy to walk everywhere. The shabby-looking sign at the front also didn’t make a great first impression. We arrived off the ferry around 1pm, unsure of the check-in time because it wasn’t on our travel agent’s itinerary. When we knocked, the person we presumed was the owner told us quite rudely, “its 3pm, as it is throughout NZ,” as though we should know. We asked where to park when we returned at 3, but were quickly told that since we didn’t know if we were in a cottage or room, it would have to be sorted then, and “I have a friend here.” The door was shut on us. We felt like naughty children being scolded, which wasn’t welcoming at all.

The host was lovely, and the accommodation was nice in a great location. When she found out we needed to leave early for the Queen Charlotte Track before breakfast, she gave us some extra pastry. We also ate at her restaurant across the road, Escape in Picton, and it’s well worth a visit. All in all, a great stay.

We had such a peaceful, cosy stay at The Gables in Picton. The rooms were spotless, comfortable, and charming, and it was a lovely place to unwind after exploring. The waterfront and local restaurants are just a short walk away. The staff were welcoming and attentive, and happy to offer advice or recommendations about the area. It’s a real gem, and I’d stay again without hesitation. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Picton.

Sonia couldn’t do enough for us, thank you, Sonia! We spent two lovely nights here after arriving from the North Island. It’s an easy walk from the Interislander dock, and about five minutes on foot from town. Being a little farther out meant we could avoid the cruise ship crowds. The room felt private and lovely, with a small deck where we could enjoy the complimentary wine on arrival.
