Anchorage Motel Apartments

After a multiday hike, the wooden hot tub was just what we wanted. Sitting in it felt like being in a barrel, and we liked it much more than the plastic kind. The rooms were good value, and the shampoo and coffee provided were good quality. The manager was so sweet and thoughtful, making sure we knew what we needed before we had to ask. She even brought fresh milk for our morning coffee. They also let us leave the car there and store valuables while we hiked, which put us at ease after reading about break-ins at Te Anau Downs and elsewhere.

We had a one bedroom apartment that was very clean, with a kitchen set up well for cooking our own meals. I asked the host if we could borrow an air fryer, and when we got back to the unit she showed up with a brand new one she’d bought that afternoon. Five star service, and the place was perfect for our time in Te Anau.

A big storm on our second night knocked out power across much of the South Island. The manager went out to buy us torches and looked into places where we could cook and get something to eat. She was incredibly helpful. The room was comfortable and well equipped, and she did everything she could to make our stay good. We spent two nights here in October 2025, and it made visiting Milford Sound much easier than driving from Queenstown. This little motel suited us perfectly. When we come back next year, we’ll stay here again.

The hot tub in the backyard was a real treat, even on a chilly evening, and the shower had the best pressure I’d come across so far on my South Island travels. The room was warm and comfortable. Service was lovely, and we felt treated as individuals even though they must see plenty of guests each day. It’s also a convenient spot, about a 10 minute walk to the main shops and five minutes to the lake. I’d happily stay again.
